Last week the Signal was which line on the Sol card you actually pay. This week OpenAI added a new line you can ask for by name: Ultrafast. Same model id. Different bill.
Page 1 ยท The sticker is still $2 / $10. The fast lane is not.
OpenAI's live pricing table still lists GPT-6.1 Sol Standard, short context, at $2.00 input, $0.10 cached input, $2.50 cache writes, and $10.00 output per million tokens. The Ultrafast row on the same page is $12.00 / $0.60 / $15.00 / $60.00. That is six times Standard on every column.

The Ultrafast mode guide says to set service_tier to ultrafast on gpt-6.1-sol or gpt-6-astra, and that Ultrafast is the fastest service tier, used when speed justifies the higher cost. It is broadly available for those two models in the API.

OpenAI's own developer-community announcement on 8 October 2026 says Ultrafast is rolling out today for GPT-6.1 Sol in the API, Codex, and ChatGPT Work. It claims "near-Astra intelligence at up to 8x faster speeds than Sol Standard," and states API pricing of $12 / $60 per million tokens, "just 1.2x the cost of Astra." Codex and ChatGPT Work access is limited to Pro 500, eligible usage-based Enterprise, and credit-based Edu plans, with Enterprise admins required to enable it.

Thesis: the fifth-price headline did not move. Ultrafast is a surcharge lane on the same SKU. If your agent defaults to the fast tier, your invoice is not the sticker you screenshot last week.
Page 2 ยท Paper price is not a call
Google's 30 September announcement for Gemini 4 Argon printed the same introductory sticker Sol uses: $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, with cached input at 95% off. After the introductory period, Google says $4 / $20 applies. The same post says Argon is rolling out to trusted cyber defenders through the Fairwind Program, with broader developer, enterprise, and consumer access "as soon as possible," starting with paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers.

A fetch of Google's Gemini Developer API pricing page on 8 October 2026 lists live Flash and Pro SKUs (including Gemini 3.8 Flash at $0.75 / $3.75 intro through 31 December 2026). Gemini 4 Argon does not appear on that public developer rate card as a call-ready model in this pass.

Illustration ยท a paper price behind a gate. No portrait, no mark.
Thesis: matching paper prices does not mean matching callability. Sol Ultrafast is a button you can press if your org qualifies. Argon is still behind a gate.
Page 3 ยท One move before you budget the headline
Do not collapse Standard, Fast, and Ultrafast into one Sol number. Do not budget a Fairwind model as if it were on your API key.

One move in 24 hours:
- Pull yesterday's Sol traffic by service_tier. If Ultrafast is already on, price it at $12 / $60 (short context), not $2 / $10. [Rates VERIFIED. Your mix: UNMEASURED until you look.]
- Check whether Codex or ChatGPT Work in your org is on Pro 500 or an eligible Enterprise/Edu plan before you promise Ultrafast to a team. Access gating is VERIFIED in OpenAI's post; your seat: UNMEASURED.
- Keep Argon off the production fallback chart until it is on the public developer pricing page you can call. Paper $2 / $10 is not inventory.
The Signal is the lane your request actually took, not the sticker on the launch graphic.
Next paid step stays the Field Kit ($17). This issue stays free and opens as text, not a PDF: payhip.com/b/4tHmb.
